In September 2013, the Mesoscale Dynamics
Group at MU
began a 3-year research endeavor, the
Program for Research on Elevated Convection with Intense
Precipitation (PRECIP). In collaboration with the National
Centers for Environmental Prediction's (NCEP) Weather Prediction Center
(WPC), we shall establish better the
nature of elevated convection with heavy rainfall and flash
flooding.
Funded by the National
Science Foundation (NSF), this project broadens our previous work on wintertime "thundersnow"
events. As of this writing, we have nearly completed a
forecasting procedure for warm season elevated convection with
heavy rainfall in the Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma (MO-KS-OK) region
of the United States, found to be favored in
previous research. This procedure will
guide our field campaigns
in 2014 and 2015, when teams will travel into
the field with the intent to sample the elevated convection
environment and its stability evolution, primarily using
rawinsondes.
During deployments, real-time data (not QC'd) and activities are updated via Facebook .
