Key Messages:
– Cooler air will enter the forecast area today behind a cold front that swept through in the early hours Friday morning.
– The weekend will remain clear and dry under the influence of a high pressure system that will slowly advance to the east over the next few days.
– Near-record-low temperatures are expected Sunday morning.
The passage of a cold front associated with a weak upper-level trough is set to bring cooler air to the region over the weekend. Clouds will linger throughout the morning, keeping morning temperatures slightly warmer than yesterday, but will clear over the course of Friday as the front advances to the southeast and cool, dry air is advected into the region. The high temperature for Friday will reach the mid 70’s, a drop much to closer to average (73) from where they have been sitting in the low 80s prior to this frontal passage.
The ridge following the antecedent trough will build throughout the weekend. A surface high pressure system located in the Great Plains region will continue pushing cool and very dry northerly air down towards us. The NAM and GFS differ as to how dry this air will be; the GFS is rendering dew points as low as 28 degrees Saturday afternoon (a dew point depression of 44 degrees), whereas the NAM is, of course, keeping things relatively more moist (dew points in the 40s, dew point depression in the 30s). Regardless, both results suggest that sky conditions will certainly be clear for Mizzou’s kickoff. Dry air could pose a concern for fire, but winds will not reach the requisite sustained 20mph to be a cause for worry. High temperatures on Saturday will be in the low 70s. Temperatures overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning will drop as low as the mid 40’s, creeping close to the record low temperature for that date of 43°F, which was achieved in 1986.
As the high pressure system advances past the forecast area to the east on Sunday, winds will shift and the anticyclonic flow will begin to bring warmer, southerly air into the region. Future forecast shifts should look out for a warming trend following these cool weekend temperatures.
