General Discussion:
A post-frontal high pressure system will make its way through the Northern United States this weekend, and with it, it will bring warmer temperatures (low 70s) Sunday due to winds coming in from the south. Clouds will pop in through the evening on both Saturday and Sunday, helping blanket in overnight temperatures to keep Columbia more comfortable.

Key Messages:

– A high pressure system will be moving through the Northern United States to the east, causing a 180° wind shift from N to S for our area throughout the forecast period.

– There will be a fluctuation of high temperatures (mid 60s – 70s) throughout the weekend.

Technical discussion:

Early this morning, a cold front drifted through the region, which pushed the stratiform clouds out of Columbia and helped boost our high to 70℉. Winds are coming in from the north, keeping temperatures from peaking any higher, but that is subject to change this Sunday. A post-frontal high pressure system is on the move along the Northern United States, and is pushing eastward with time. This high pressure system is going to shift surface winds from north to south throughout the weekend that will aid in warmer temperatures come Sunday, as mentioned earlier. Currently, this high pressure system is located over the upper Midwest, and will propagate east over Iowa on Saturday, before moving off to the eastern half of the United States Sunday into Monday.

On Saturday, northerly winds will persist, pulling in cooler temperatures until the afternoon hours. This northerly flow will prohibit the high (65℉) from reaching into the 70s. As the high quickly moves to the Eastern US, these winds will veer to the east Saturday night into Sunday, before shifting once more to bring in warmer temperatures from the south. By Sunday afternoon, a subtle warm air advection regime will set up to the west of the anticyclone, and allow for a minimal warm up (71℉) Sunday, compared to Saturday (65℉). Throughout Sunday afternoon, warm, moist advection will set up in our area, which will provide us with some cloud cover that will keep temperatures warmer (53℉) overnight Sunday as well.
