General Discussion:

The cold front that passed through the area last night has delivered colder temperatures as promised. This cooler weather will linger all weekend as highs hang 5-10°F below average (Avg. high 68°F), with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. While it may be chilly this weekend, the rain will stay away throughout.

Key Messages:

  1. Colder weather hangs around the area this weekend, with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s.
  2. Campus sees a break from the rain and storms over the period with a partly cloudy to mostly sunny sky all weekend.

Both the NAM and GFS were consulted for this forecast a there was general agreement between the two over the period.

At 250MB, the jet stream is located over Missouri, though zonal flow and weak divergence bring uneventful conditions. Zonal flow exists through the mid layers as well, though at the surface a weak high helped to advect in the cold air that consumed the area this morning behind yesterday’s cold front.

For this afternoon and evening, zonal flow will persist in the mid and upper levels. Moisture is scattered throughout the mid layers, enough so to create spotty clouds, all of which will be mid to high. High temperatures will heavily depend on diurnal heating but will either be in the upper 50s or low 60s. A few clouds will persist into the night as overnight lows dip into the low 40s, not quite cold enough to create frost.

Saturday will see a similar story as Friday with zonal flow aloft and a similar moisture profile indicating more mid to high clouds. A stronger high will begin to take over to our west and advect colder air into the area. As a result, highs will range from the mid to upper 50s. The clouds remain into Saturday evening and night, though partial clearing will begin in the early hours of Sunday as the high makes its way towards campus.

By Sunday campus will see a mostly sunny sky as a result of the aforementioned surface high pressure. As such, highs will claw back into the low 60s from diurnal heating making for a nice afternoon.

Future forecasters should monitor a low in the upper plains that could bring moisture on Monday.
