General Discussion:

Pleasant gameday temperatures will continue throughout Saturday. However, a deep trough will be bringing a strong blast of cold air into the area cooling us down to the low 30s Saturday night and then even lower as the associated cold front moves through the area Sunday, leading to a clear sky Sunday night and temperatures plunging below freezing.

Key Messages:

  • Pleasant gameday conditions exist during Saturday
  • Cloudy conditions for the first part of the weekend are expected
  • A strong cold front will pass through the region Sunday morning plunging temperatures and clearing sky conditions

Skew-T’s this weekend are showing backing winds and warm air advection leading to Saturday being on the warmer side reaching mid 60s. Looking further into the future, veering winds into Sunday at 9z are bringing cold air advection and a strong cold front providing colder temperatures into the low 20s for the end of the weekend.

At the 300mb a jet streak peaking at 130 knots moves into the area by Sunday night into Monday morning (A strong jet streak usually leads to severe weather tendencies but due to the lack of moisture with this system the threat for severe weather is non existent low moisture associated makes even the chance for rain unlikely). The trough is mature and by Sunday it will be digging deep into the area and bringing in colder temperatures and huge temperature variations.

Models reach agreement on a lack of moisture. We need moisture for any precipitation to appear so chances remain low (< 5%). High clouds that will be present this weekend are corroborated by time-height maps showing relative humidity at different levels. The HREF ensemble agrees and supports high to mid-level clouds Saturday.

Model consensus shows temperature advection at the 850mb level is showing cold air advection and cold front entering the area on Saturday at 21z leading to breezy conditions at 15 mph. Ahead of the front, prefrontal compressional warming will cause temperatures to rise on Saturday and cause the air to lift. The dry atmosphere at the surface in tandem with ample upward motion will cause temperatures to rise briefly, before dropping back down once the front passes over the area.

The lack of surface moisture and insufficient dewpoint depression further inhibits the chances of precipitation for the forecasting period. Further into the weekend the thickness of the atmosphere will decrease and conditions will cool, introducing cold arctic temperatures in the low 20s for Sunday night into Monday morning.

Future forecasters should note the continuation of the trough through the area which will lead to ridging and warmer temperatures.

General Discussion:

Cloudy breezy weather this weekend with temperatures dropping Saturday night (32°F) into Sunday (39°F) due to a cold front passing through the area brining northern dry cold air into the region.  Pull out your winter clothes and be prepared for temperatures dropping significantly into the 20s throughout the day on Sunday.

Key Messages:

  • Above-average temperatures (highs in the upper 50s, lows around 40°F) will be brought to an end by a strong cold front passing through on Saturday afternoon.
  • Abnormally cold temperatures (30s) will follow the front Saturday night, lingering through the weekend.

Friday through Saturday afternoon:

A cold front is passing through Missouri this morning, with winds shifting from southwesterly to northwesterly in its wake. While air behind the front is colder that what it replaced, it is also significantly drier, which will lead to high temperatures today to be similar to those yesterday (69°F) as drier air heats more easily. Clouds ahead of the front are quickly leaving the area, leading to a largely sunny day. Tonight, as a surface low currently centered over southern Alberta speeds southeast, clouds will build ahead of another cold front that arrives Saturday afternoon, remaining throughout the day Saturday. Temperatures will drop into the low 40s overnight, rising up to the mid-60s tomorrow afternoon, as the cold front arrives. While this is the first ‘Alberta Clipper’ system of the cold season, there will be minimal chances of any precipitation for us, frozen or liquid.

Saturday evening through Sunday:

A very strong upper-level trough will dig into the area, as an elongated surface high pressure system is anticipated behind the front after the passage of the surface low. Bitterly cold air for the season will be advected into mid-Missouri. A stiff (up to 20 mph) northerly breeze will kick in upon the passage of the cold front, with temperatures dropping to the mid-to-low 30s for Sunday morning. The sun will return on Sunday as the overcast breaks up, but continuing northerly winds will keep high temperatures no higher than the low 40s. Future forecasters should note an even colder morning in store for Monday as radiational cooling comes into play along with cold air advection.
