General Discussion: A dry and mostly cloudy Stop Day is in the forecast. A blast of Arctic air will pass through Columbia Saturday night, bringing extremely cold temperatures. Lows are forecasted to be in the single digits; frostbite is a serious concern. Wear multiple layers and limit outside exposure to reduce the risk of obtaining frostbite related injuries Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Key Messages:

  • Overcast cloud cover is persistent throughout the forecast period, bringing a low diurnal temperature variation.
  • A blast of Arctic air will pass through the CWA over Saturday night, bringing single digit overnight lows in the future.

Current conditions depict overcast cloud cover. A band of wintry mix is situated Northeast of the CWA. A trace amount of light precipitation is not out of the question. The atmosphere at the 300mb level is completely meridional with a positively tilted trough over Eastern CONUS. This comes with an amplified jet stream bringing strong winds from the Northwest. A surface level Low pressure system is situated over western Nebraska, aiding in northwesterly flow.

Overcast cloud cover continues into Saturday night with low cloud ceilings. With the increased cloud cover over the CWA, a low diurnal temperature variation is expected. A long wave trough will develop and deepen throughout the day Saturday, bringing a blast of Arctic air overnight. Omega values are strong beginning around Saturday 18z. There is intermittent moisture at the 700mb level, although this moisture will not extend down to the surface. With all things considered, winter precipitation is not expected to occur with this event. Frigid temperatures are forecasted with a single digit low overnight.

Future forecasters should monitor moisture levels for any changes in precipitation forecasts.
